Nutrition is where the majority of people go wrong when it comes to achieving their goal of getting a six pack. This is also where mindset comes in because you have to have the discipline and the mental strength to consistently eat right. In the modern world there s a lot of debate surrounding calories, carbohydrates, fat and protein.
Every expert seems to have an opinion on the right ratio to eat these and which diets to follow. My advice is concentrate on a good balance between, carbs, fat and protein, and eat only natural whole foods instead of processed junk. A good guide is, if it comes in a package it is most probably processed and there are better options you can choose. If you stick to this, a lot of the overeating and blood sugar problems will take care of themselves.

The most common mistakes I see day after day is “too much cardio” and “not eating enough healthy fats”. When most people ask how do i get a six pack their first thought is Cardio and lots of it. I cannot blame you for this, as this is what most of us have been led to believe but we have been misinformed. One of the major drawbacks of cardio is that over time you will lose lean muscle mass which will decrease your metabolic rate; this will make it harder to burn fat and easier to gain it. I’ve seen lots of examples where people do too much cardio and end up getting the ‘fat skinny man (or woman)’ look where they have very little muscle, yet have a flabby belly.
So instead of hours of boring cardio concentrate on high intensity weight training. Using this method will result in you keeping your lean muscle mass and you won’t experience the slowdown of metabolic rate. It will actually increase. Another common misconception is that to decrease body fat you must limit your fat intake to a very small amount. When you do this you muddle up your muscle building and fat burning hormones which will not help your cause. Try to get some source of healthy fats in every meal. Whole eggs, extra virgin olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocados etc…. What is the best way to boost my metabolism?
If I had to choose which exercise would be the most effective at boosting your metabolism and reduce belly fat it would be high intensity clean and press. Do some for of clean and press twice per week. You can use a bar, dumbbells, or kettlebells. Deadlifts and Squats would also be high on the list.

When you get to that point you will see results when you raise your training intensity to a whole new level. Think about adding some hill sprints to reach that new intensity. Another great way to increase intensity is doing super sets or alternating between body parts i.e. you go straight from working one area of your body to another area with no rest in between. For example you could alternate between a lower body exercise like the squat and a multi joint upper body exercise like the bench press or chins.
The key is short rest periods and high intensity multi-joint movements. If you are dripping with sweat and your lungs are gasping for air then you are on the right track.
4. How do I cope with the temptations of drinking alcohol, junk food etc…?
This can be a struggle for many people but it doesn’t have to be. Try limiting yourself when out with friends to 1 or 2 drinks, you don’t have to drink excessively to have fun. Don’t fall into the habit of having a few drinks everyday. When eating out at restaurants or fast food joints try to make it an occasional thing only. One rule I stick to when eating out is to never eat fries or drink sodas. Order some steamed veg instead of the fries, and order water or some unsweetened iced tea to drink.
5. What can I do when I lose motivation to get a six pack?
A lot of people give up because they don’t see results fast enough and their unsure if what their doing is actually going to work. If you follow a specific plan and be patient, the results will come. Maybe your fat loss results aren’t what you were hoping for but look at other improvements. Look at how many chins you can now do, look at how much you’ve increased your squat etc. Keep focusing on the positive things that are changing and your ultimate goal will be around the corner.
Get a training partner. This has been proven to increase motivation; it also adds an accountability factor, so you cannot let your buddy down.
Get a picture of your perfe
ct body and pin it up somewhere you can see it throughout the day. Make goals and strive to achieve them. E.g. I am going to lose 10lbs of fat over the next 6 weeks. Be realistic here.
